The muhurtham — traditional dress for the main ceremony
For the muhurtham (the main Telugu wedding ceremony), the groom traditionally wears a fine silk pancha (dhoti) in white or cream with a gold kasavu border, paired with a matching silk uttariyam (upper stole) and a silk jubba or formal kurta. This is the most traditional choice and is expected in more conservative Telugu families.
In contemporary Telugu weddings, the sherwani has become common for the muhurtham — particularly in families with strong North Indian connections or in weddings with a more elaborate aesthetic. A South Indian-influenced sherwani — in fine silk or Dharmavaram silk rather than heavily embroidered North Indian brocade — is the most contextually appropriate version for a traditional Telugu ceremony.
The reception — where contemporary choices work well
Telugu wedding receptions are typically large formal events with extensive guest lists and an emphasis on visual splendour. The reception gives the groom the greatest freedom in choice: a fine Western suit, a Jodhpuri suit, or a rich silk sherwani or bandhgala are all appropriate. The key requirement is quality — Telugu wedding receptions are photographed extensively and the quality of the groom's outfit is visible in every image.
For guests at Telugu weddings, both Indian and Western formal dress are appropriate. The Telugu community has a strong tradition of silk sarees for women and formal kurta or suit for men. Guests in fine Indian formal wear — a quality silk kurta with a fine churidar or matching trouser, or a well-made bandhgala — are always well received.
