The nikah — what to wear at the ceremony
The Islamic nikah ceremony calls for respectful, modest dress with an emphasis on white and off-white. The groom at a Tamil Muslim nikah typically wears a white or cream kurta with white or cream salwar or churidar. The Pathani suit in white fine cotton is also a traditional and respected choice. Some grooms add an embroidered taqiyah (cap) and a white or cream sherwani over the base garment for additional formality.
For male guests at the nikah, white and off-white are preferred, particularly if the ceremony is held in a mosque. A clean, well-pressed white kurta is always appropriate. More saturated colours may be appropriate depending on the family's specific tradition — when in doubt, white or cream is safe.
The reception — formal dress for the Tamil Muslim wedding celebration
Tamil Muslim wedding receptions in Chennai are characteristically elaborate and celebratory — large, well-catered events with hundreds of guests and a strong emphasis on festive dress. The reception palette is much broader than the nikah: rich silks, brocades, and embellished kurtas in jewel tones and warm celebratory colours are appropriate and expected. The groom at the reception often wears a more elaborate version of his nikah outfit — perhaps adding a fine embroidered sherwani in ivory or cream over the white base, or switching to a richer silk kurta-churidar ensemble with a brocade bandi.
For guests at Tamil Muslim receptions, Indian formal dress in a wide range of colours is appropriate. White is less common for guests at the reception (where it may risk confusion with the groom's traditional white palette) but not prohibited. Festive colours — gold, deep green, rich burgundy — are particularly well-suited to the celebratory character of the Tamil Muslim wedding reception.
