Hair and beard — timing is everything
The most common grooming mistake grooms make is cutting their hair too close to the wedding date. A fresh haircut — done the day before or the morning of the wedding — looks too new in photographs: the hairline is too clean, the shape is too rigid. The ideal haircut for a wedding is done 7 to 10 days before the event, which allows the cut to settle and look natural while still looking fresh and well-maintained.
For beards, the same principle applies: trim and shape the beard 5 to 7 days before the wedding rather than immediately before. If you are planning to shave the beard entirely for the wedding — a significant change — do this at least two weeks before so that any irritation has settled and the skin looks natural in the photographs.
Skin preparation — what to do and when
The wedding photographs will be seen for decades. Skin that has been cared for in the months before the wedding looks different from skin that has not — not dramatically different, but genuinely better. The minimum skincare preparation for a groom: a daily SPF moisturiser (Chennai's UV index demands this year-round), adequate hydration, and quality sleep in the week before the wedding.
If any skin treatments are planned — professional facials, chemical peels, any treatment for specific skin concerns — these should be completed at least three weeks before the wedding, not immediately before. Any treatment that has even a small risk of causing redness or a reaction is too risky in the final week. The week before the wedding is for maintaining, not experimenting.
