How wide is wide — and what cloth to use

Wide-leg trousers need cloth with sufficient weight and body to carry the extra fullness without looking limp. A lightweight tropical worsted can work, but a medium-weight flannel or a substantial wool-linen blend hangs better and looks more intentional. The cloth should drape — it should fall from the hip in a clean, soft column rather than clinging or bunching.

For Chennai's climate, a wide-leg trouser in a lightweight linen is a practical and beautiful choice for warm-weather occasions. The extra fullness allows air to circulate around the leg, making the garment considerably cooler than a slim-cut trouser in the same cloth.
