The herringbone weave — character and versatility
The herringbone is woven in the same twill structure as a standard twill, but with the direction of the weave reversed at regular intervals, creating the characteristic V-shape when the cloth is laid flat. The resulting texture catches light from different angles, giving the cloth a subtle movement that a plain cloth does not have.
In charcoal, a herringbone suit adds depth and texture to what would otherwise be a plain dark cloth — the ideal choice for a second or third suit in the wardrobe. In navy, it adds a similar textural interest while remaining entirely professional. In brown or tan, a herringbone takes on a more country or weekend character — appropriate for social and informal professional occasions.
For Chennai's climate, a lightweight herringbone worsted in a tropical weight is the practical choice for year-round wear. Heavier herringbones — particularly flannel herringbones — are reserved for the cool months.
