Mid-grey, light grey, silver — which shade?
Mid-grey — a true medium tone, neither dark nor pale — is the most practical. It is dark enough to be worn in formal settings, light enough to work in summer and in warm-weather contexts. It is the most shirt-compatible grey, working with white, pale blue, cream, and a range of coloured shirts equally well.
Light grey, sometimes called silver-grey, is a more distinctive choice — cooler in climate and in character, it reads as assured and understated. It is less appropriate in the darkest professional settings but excellent for formal events, weddings as a guest, and summer occasions where a mid or dark grey would feel heavy. A light grey suit in a fine tropical worsted is one of the most elegant warm-weather commissions we take.
A pale grey flannel — the flannel suit in a medium-light grey — is one of the great traditional classics of menswear, associated with the understated elegance of old money at its most confident. It drapes beautifully, softens with wear, and looks excellent in the cooler months.
