The topcoat is a lighter coat than the overcoat — typically in a medium-weight wool of 300–400 gsm — that functions as an outer layer for the cool months and for travel to temperate climates. It is the coat for the man who wants a coat that works in Chennai's brief winter and in Singapore or London in spring. Topcoat vs overcoat — when to choose each

The topcoat is lighter, less formal, and more versatile than an overcoat. It sits over a suit jacket comfortably without adding too much bulk, making it practical for daily professional use in cool weather. An overcoat, by contrast, is a heavier and more formal garment better suited to very cold weather and very formal occasions.

For Chennai residents who travel frequently to cooler climates — Delhi in December, London in spring — a topcoat in a medium-weight worsted or a fine wool-cotton blend is the most practical outerwear investment. It packs more easily than a heavy overcoat and is wearable in a wider temperature range.
