The raglan sleeve — comfort and practicality
The defining characteristic of the raglan coat is its freedom of movement. Because the sleeve is cut as part of the coat body rather than set into a separate armhole, there is no restriction at the shoulder when the arms are raised or extended. For long journeys — whether by plane, train or car — this makes a considerable difference in comfort over a full day of travel.
The raglan coat is slightly less formal than a standard set-in-sleeve overcoat, because the diagonal seam at the shoulder gives it a different visual character. In a fine wool or a wool-cashmere blend, it reads as relaxed but refined. In a travel-weight cloth, it is the most practical overcoat choice for the travelling professional.
