Wool Ties.

More textured, more relaxed, and with a knot that no silk tie can replicate.

A wool tie occupies a different register from a silk tie — slightly more casual, more textured, more associated with the sports jacket and odd trouser than the formal business suit. Its knot — a square, slightly dimpled knot in a fabric with body and texture — is distinctively different from the silk tie's smooth, triangular knot. For a jacket with a tweedy or textured cloth, or for a smart-casual occasion where a silk tie would be overdressed, a wool tie in a complementary colour is exactly right.

Wool ties — knit wool and woven wool

Wool ties come in two broad types: knit (a flat-knit or rib-knit construction with a square end) and woven (a standard necktie construction in a worsted or flannel wool cloth). The knit wool tie is the most casual — its square end and knit construction clearly signal a relaxed register. It pairs well with a button-down collar shirt and a tweed jacket. The woven wool tie is slightly more formal and can be worn in most business-casual settings.

Colours in wool ties run from classic solids — burgundy, navy, forest green, brown — to subtle textures and patterns in the same colour families. A wine-red knit tie with a glen plaid jacket is a classic pairing. A dark green woven wool tie with a charcoal flannel suit adds warmth and character without announcing itself.
